NEW YORK – The Columbia men’s tennis team lost its second match in as many days, as the #37 Lions were defeated by the #64 Brown Bears in Providence, R.I., Sunday. Brown took an early lead by winning the doubles point, and the Lions couldn’t get the singles wins to make the comeback. With the loss, the Lions are now 16-4 overall, 3-2 in the Ivy League.
Brown swept the doubles point in all three spots. In the No.1 spot, the nationally ranked team of #88 Soufiane Azarqui and Brandon Burke defeated first-years Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur, 8-7(4). Tizian Bucher and Nathaniel Gery suffered an 8-3 loss in the No.2 spot, while Haig Schneiderman and Winston Lin lost 8-4 at No.3.
Singles saw a similar fate for the Lions. Columbia got wins from two first-years. Winston Lin, playing at No.1, defeated Brandon Burke, 7-5, 6-4, to remain undefeated in Ivy League play, while Ashok Narayana had a win at No.4, beating Michael Riechmann, 6-3, 7-5.
The rest of the Columbia lineup suffered tough losses. At No.2, Schneiderman fell to Azarqui, 6-4, 7-6(5), while Gery fell in the No.3 spot to William Spector, 6-3, 6-1. Senior Rajeev Deb-Sen lost at No.5 to Sam Fife, 6-2, 6-0, while Tizian Bucher fell to Mike Hill at No.6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Up next for the Lions is the final weekend of Ivy League play. Columbia will host Princeton, Friday, April 20 at 2 p.m., before ending the season in Philadelphia, taking on Penn, Sunday, April 22 at 2 p.m.
