Interview: Head Coach Willy Wood Previews Heps

NEW YORK - On Saturday, Oct. 27 the Columbia men's and women's cross country teams head to Princeton, N.J., for the 2012 Ivy League Heptagonal Cross Country Championships at West Windsor Fields. The women's 6K race begins at 11 a.m., followed by the men's 8K at noon. The awards ceremony will follow at 1 p.m.

Fans can come cheer on the Lions on the free fan bus. Columbia Athletics is sponsoring bus transportation to Princeton, which will leave from 116th and Amsterdam at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. The bus will depart after the awards ceremony. Fans should locate the Columbia representative to find out when the bus is departing from Princeton.

The men's team has compiled an impressive season so far and they will look to ride that momentum into Heps on Saturday. After a strong fifth-place finish in the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational on Friday, Oct. 12, the Lions jumped seven spots to No. 10 in the latest USTFCCCA Division I Men's Cross Country National Rankings, the highest in program history.

The Wisconsin field featured 19 of the nation's top-30 ranked opponents in the USTFCCCA Poll and included six Ivy League opponents. In one of the biggest performances in program history, the Lions defeated 14 ranked opponents and placed the highest in the Ivy League beating last year's Heps winner Princeton.

The Columbia women's team has put together a strong season heading to the 6k-race at Heps. The Lions begin the season taking the title in the Vermont Invitational in impressive fashion. Five Columbia runners finished in the top 10 for a winning team score of 20.

The Lions continued to their impressive run at the 2011 Toledo Inter-Regional Bubble Buster.  Columbia tallied 92 points in the 4K race to take third defeating three top 25 USTFCCCA ranked opponents. Following that performance, the women's team moved into the USTFCCCA National Rankings, for the first time since 2005, at No. 24 on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

- Has Columbia's second fastest 6k time this season: 21:13
