Women's Swimming and Diving Finishes Third At Frank Elm Invite

PISCATAWAY, N.J.  - On Sunday, Nov.18 the Columbia women's swimming and diving team returned to the RU Aquatics Center for the final day of the 2012 Frank Elm Invitational.

The 11 a.m. preliminaries saw the Lions grab two top seeds in the 200 backstroke and the 200 butterfly. Alena Kluge hit the wall first in the 200 back prelims at 2:00.92 and Caroline Lukins came away with the top finish in the 200 Fly at 2:03.65.

Later in the day, Kluge captured the victory in the finals of the 200 back with a personal-best time of 1:59.68. Lukins did the same in the 200 fly finals with a winning time of 2:01.74. First-year Kristine Ng earn a runner-up finish in the 200 fly with a time of 2:02.62. A runner-up time of 16:49.55 in the 1650 free by Daniela Rueda showed big potential in the first-year swimmer.

After finishing third in the prelims of the 200 breaststroke at 2:21.35, senior Katie Meili returned in the finals to win the event with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 2:12.70. Meili broke an eight-year long pool record held by world champion Rebecca Soni in the 200 breast.The Lions ended the day with a third-place finish in the 400 free relay. The quartet of Meili, sophomore Sidney Drill, sophomore Salena Huang, and sophomore Mikaila Gaffey combined for a time of 3:30.41.

Columbia competed in just two days and 13 events of the three-day 19 event Frank Elm Invitational.  In two days of competition, the Lions tallied 1368 points to finish third overall in the 11 team women's field.

Up next, the women's swimming team will take their talents down to Austin, Texas to compete among the nation's best at the US Winter Nationals from Thursday, Nov. 29 through Sunday, Dec. 2. The women's diving team will be back in action at the Brown Invite in Providence, R.I. from Saturday, Dec. 1 through Sunday, Dec. 2.
