No. 70 Women’s Tennis Shuts Out Florida International, 7-0
NEW YORK - The No. 70 Columbia women's tennis team hosted Florida International Sunday afternoon, dispatching of the visiting Panthers, 7-0. The Lions posted four straight-set wins in singles action, including a 6-0, 6-0 blanking by Ioana Alecsui in the No. 6 match.
Columbia took all three of the doubles matches in quick fashion. Bianca Sanon and Kanika Vaidya lost just one game to Rita Miasak and Aleksandra Trifunovic in the No. 1 doubles match, while Lauren Stratman and Tiana Takenaga downed Lotte Gras and Magali Holt by a score of 8-3 in the No. 3 match. Nicole Bartnik and Crystal Leung completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 decision over Guilietta Boha and Carlotta Orlando.
Alecsui handed Holt her second loss in the No. 6 singles match, 6-0, 6-0. Katarina Kovacevic gave up just four games to Gras, capturing the win with back-to-back 6-2 sets. No. 24 Bartnik was similarly dominant in the No. 1 match, downing Maisak, 6-3, 6-2.
No. 81 Vaidya faced a challenge from Orlando, but was able to secure the 7-5, 7-5 victory to improve to 3-0 in dual season. Leung and Lauren Stratman each lost the opening sets of their matches, but rebounded to take the No. 3 and 4 matches and complete the sweep in favor of Columbia.
The Lions will host the ECAC Team Championships at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center from Feb. 8-10.
