NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 12 Columbia women's squash team got off to a great start at the 2012 College Squash Association National Team Championships, downing No. 13 George Washington, 8-1, in the opening round of the Kurtz Cup (B Division).
The Lions captured positions No. 2-9on the ladder, including five sweeps, en route to the victory over the Colonials. Leah Barnet won the opening game of the No. 5 match, 11-0, and cruised to the three-game win. Diya Kumar was similarly dominant in the No. 9 match, notallowing Adriana Calderon to score a single point in the second and third games. Moinca Stone, Katie Quan and Skylar Dickey also notches sweeps on the day.
The top of the ladder for the Lions faced tougher challenges as each match except the No. 1 contest went into at least four games. Kate Calihan went up 2-0 on Kelly Barnes in the No. 4 match, but was forced to win the fifth game, 11-7, after Barnes took the third and fourth games. Alisha Maity overcame a one-game deficit on her way to a four-game victory over Emely Levyn in the No. 3 match. Reyna Pacheco one-upped Maity, coming back from two games down to secure a win over Jacqueline Shea in the No. 2 match.
The Lions will face off against No. 9 Dartmouth Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the semifinals of the Kurtz Cup.
