Menís Tennis Hosts Cornell Saturday in Matchup of Top-50 Powers

NEW YORK – The 44th-ranked Columbia men’s tennis team will begin its Ivy League schedule this Saturday, March 30 when it hosts No. 41 Cornell at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center. The Lions and Big Red will begin competition at 2 p.m.

Columbia (10-5) will enter Saturday’s match well-rested after competing six times in an eight-day span over Spring Break. The Lions opened the trip in Montgomery, Ala. at the Blue-Gray Invitational, going 2-1 with wins over William & Mary and No. 38 Nebraska. Columbia then headed west for three matches in the Lone Star state, also going 2-1 in that span. Victories over Southern Methodist and Texas-Arlington highlighted the road trip.

The Lions’ top doubles duo of Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur picked up the No. 36 ranking in the latest ITA poll after winning their last three matches. Narayana and Schnur were critical to Columbia’s win over SMU, edging No. 79 Arturs Kazljevs and Mischa Mowicki, 9-8.

Winston Lin, the Lions’ top singles player, boasts a 9-4 record this season and is ranked No. 52 in the nation. Lin’s nine wins is just one shy of Schnur who leads the team with 10, including a 7-1 mark as Columbia’s No. 4.

Cornell stands at 11-4 on the year and dropped from No. 33 to No. 41 in the latest ITA poll after going 2-2 on its Spring Break trip. The Big Red also represented the Ivy League at the Blue Gray Invitational, going 1-2 with its lone win coming against William & Mary. Cornell capped the trip with a victory at Central Florida.

Columbia and Cornell met earlier this season in the finals at the ECAC Indoor Championships. After Cornell narrowly took the doubles point, the Big Red captured the first three singles matches to finish for the 4-0 victory. The Lions and Big Red split their meetings last season, with Cornell winning once again at the ECAC Championships, before Columbia exacted revenge with a 4-3 win to start the Ivy League season.
