PALO ALTO, Calif. – A handful of Columbia track and field distance runners opened their outdoor season at the Stanford Invitational on Friday, March 29. The Lions competed in both the men and women’s 5,000m and 10,000m events.
Daniel Everett highlighted the Lions trip with a school record performance in the 5,000m. With a fifth place finish time of 13:57.72 in the section two heat, Everett now holds the Columbia record. Mark Fiegen posted the second best Columbia time of the day with 14:02.46 in the section one heat.The senior was joined by teammates Paul Ross and Leighton Spencer who also competed in the 5,000m run. In the 10,000m run, Mike Murphy led the way with a top 15 finish. Murphy posted a career-best time of 29:03.33 for 11th-place. Jacob Sienko followed with a 30th-place time of 29:55.77 and Nicolas Composto claimed 31st place with a time of 30:07.13.
On the women's side, Erin Gillingham represented the Lions in the 5,000m run. She crossed the line in a time of 16:28.73 for 17th place in the section two heat.
At the Texas Relays, Nadia Eke and QueenDenise Okeke posted solid jumps Friday afternoon. With a leap of 12.83, Eke claimed ninth place in the triple jump. Okeke also took tenth place in the triple jump with a leap of 12.63. Eke’s jump of 12.83 currently ranks No. 2 in the east region and Okeke’s jump of 12.63 ranks No. 4.
Earlier this morning, the quartet of Ashley Cunningham, Marvellous Iheukwumere, Iris Chijoke and Jaycee Parker competed in the women’s 4x100 relay prelims to begin the day. With a time of 47.97, the foursome finished 37th overall.
Iheukwumere also went on to compete in the prelims of the women’s 100m dash. In her hometown of Austin, the junior posted a career-best time of 11.87 for a 34th place finish.
Paul Snyder kicked-off the Texas Relays on Thursday, March 28 with a fantastic 5000m race. The senior clocked in with a time of 14:29.75 to capture his first victory to open the season.
