Bartnik’s Great Career Ends at NCAA Singles Championships
NCAA TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Two-time Ivy League Player of the Year and Columbia senior Nicole Bartnik played a close match against Alabama’s Alexa Guarachi Wednesday in the opening round of the NCAA Singles Championship, but fell in three sets.
Bartnik jumped out to an early lead, capturing the first set by a score of 6-2. Guarachi responded by taking the second set, 6-4, forcing the decisive set. With Bartnik and Guarachi engaging in a tight third set, the rain settled on the court forcing a short delay.
After the break, Gaurachi was able to force match point, which Bartnik fended off four times, but the Crimson Tide senior closed out the match with another 6-4 set.
Bartnik warps up a career that saw her garner three All-Ivy League first team selections, as well as becoming just the third women’s tennis player in conference history to win back-to-back Player of the Year honors.
