In continuing to strive for athletic excellence, Columbia Athletics welcomes Andrew James Pierce, RD, CSCS, to the staff as the sports nutritionist, as announced by Director of Athletics and Physical Education, M. Dianne Murphy on Monday, July 15.

Pierce, a master’s candidate in nutrition and dietetics at New York University, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the position. Pierce earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise and sport science from the University of Utah in 2010. While at Utah, Pierce also pursued a minor in nutrition, as well as working in the fitness field.

Pierce spent time as an undergraduate working for both Foothill Personal Training and the Peak Academy, providing personal training and promoting fitness among both facilities clientele.

Within the University of Utah, Pierce served as a teaching assistant in the division of nutrition and also worked as an assistant director within the nutrition clinic. He was primarily charged with creating and conducting workshops and seminars on topics related to nutrition, physical activity and health.

After graduating, Pierce moved to New York City to begin his master’s work at NYU. In 2012, he worked as a dietetic intern at the Mount Sinai Medical Center. At Mount Sinai, Pierce conducted nutrition screening and assessments, while also providing evidence-based nutrition intervention for over 1,000 beds at the hospital. He also presented current medical nutrition therapy research to clinical professionals.

Most recently, Pierce has served as the resident sports dietitian at Brooke R. Alpert Dietetics-Nutrition. With the company, he was tasked with providing individual nutrition and exercise counseling to clients.

Pierce’s certifications include: Registered Dietitian (RD) from the Commission on Dietetic Registration, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength and Condition Association and CPR/AED/First Aid from the American Red Cross. He is also involved with the following professional associations: Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutrition (SCAN), Collegiate & Professional Sports Dietitians Association (CPSDA) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
