NEW YORK - The Columbia women's soccer team (1-1-0) dropped its 2013 home opener, 2-0, to the unbeaten Monmouth Hawks (1-2-0) on Sunday, Sept. 8 at Columbia Soccer Stadium. Grace Redmon posted six saves in goal to aid the Lions' fight against the Monmouth attack.
Both teams found shots early in the first half. Columbia's Beverly Leon came open for a shot at the 14:22 minute mark that was blocked by the Monmouth defense. The Hawks scored the only goal of the half at the 22 minute mark with a strike from Alexis McTammey that was assisted by Dana Costello. Monmouth would hold the Lions scoreless, and Columbia trailed 1-0 at the break.
The Hawks capitalized on an early opportunity to begin the second half and increased the Columbia deficit to 2-0 after a score at the 53rd minute. The Hawks' Costello found the back of the net off a Julie Spracklin assist. Columbia continued to battle throughout the second half to trim its deficit. A few close opportunities slipped throught the Lions feet in the early minutes and Redmon continued keep the Hawks at bay wtih three saves.
In the closing minutes, Elly McGuffog fired a shot at the 87th minute that forced a Monmouth save. The Hawks held on to win 2-0 and remain unbeaten.
Up next, the Lions will begin a four-game road stretch as they travel to Fairfield, Conn. to take on Sacred Heart on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m.
