NEW HAVEN, Conn. – No. 54 Winston Lin won the top flight singles title as the Columbia men's tennis team had another strong outing at the inaugural edition of the Ivy Plus Invitational this past weekend.
The 13-team field featured some of the best teams in the northeast region, including Army, Binghamton, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Marist, Old Dominion, Penn, St. John's, UNC Wilmington and host Yale.
Lin toppled Ivy League opponent Chris Kipouras of Dartmouth in straight sets in the first round, 6-3, 6-1, and then won 6-5, 6-3 in the quarterfinals over Asika Isoh of Army. Lin's dominance continued as he rolled past Harvard's No. 1 Denis Nguyen, 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals, earning himself the right to compete for the title. Pitted against Shaun Chaudhuri, the No. 2 of Harvard, in the finals, Lin got off to a strong start, winning 6-1 in the first set. Chaudhuri fought back to even the score with a 6-4 win in the second set, but Lin shut him down for good in the third set for a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 victory.
Max Schnur made it to the finals round of the C flight, falling in a tightly contested battle to Kelvin Lam of Harvard. Schnur won the first set, 6-4, but Lam completed the comeback with 6-4, 6-2 victories in the next sets.
Columbia will resume play at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma from Sept. 28-Oct. 6.
