Women's Tennis Completes USTA Billie Jean Invitational
FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – The Columbia women’s tennis team had a strong showing at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center as part of the USTA Women's College Invitational in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. this weekend.
The Columbia doubles duo of Tina Jiang and Crystal Leung highlighted the Lions’ success by winning the A flight doubles title on Sunday. The partnership started off with an 8-3 downing of Rafaela Panizza and Alexandra Sachs (St. Francis) in the round of 16, and continued with an 8-1 victory over Harvard’s doubles team of Amy He and Liang Spencer. In the semifinals round, Jiang/Leung toppled over the pair of Yvonne Hubler and Alexandra Walters of Charleston Southern by an 8-1 score to earn the right to battle for the title. Nearly unstoppable, Jiang/Leung dominated in the finals round over Ivy League foes Joan Cannon and Sivan Krems from Princeton, 8-4.
Jiang was also strong in singles action by reaching the finals in the singles flight B draw, but was unable to come away with the title. Jiang breezed by Annie DiMuro of Binghamton, 6-0, 6-1 in round one, followed by a gutsy come from behind victory over Harvard’s Amy He, 5-7, 7-5, 10-6. Jiang continued her success over Princeton’s Dorothy Tang with a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the semifinal round before falling in tiebreaker to Monica Lin of Harvard (5-7, 6-3, 10-6).
The Lions also four singles players reach the semifinals of their respective draws.
Iona Alecsiu downed Seton Hall’s Rocio Portela, 6-3, 6-2 the first round of singles flight C. She then advanced to the semifinals with a tough 6-1, 5-7, 10-6 win over UTA’s Angeles de los Rios.
In singles flight D, Tiana Takenaga defeated Jessica Birowski 6-4,7-6 (1), followed by a 6-0, 2-6, 10-6 victory over Jen Deluca of Providence in the quarterfinals. She then dropped a 6-3, 6-1 match to Alexandra Walters of Charleston Southern in the semifinal round.
Laura Wiley rolled over FDU’s Masha Krachok, 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Wiley earned a 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 tiebreaker victory over Farris Cunningham of Rutgers before falling in the semis.
Ami Li advanced to the semifinals following a 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 win over Connecticut’s Marie Gargiulo, and a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Nathalie Habegger of NJIT.
In the top singles flight, Leung played her way past Ksenia Kuzmenko of NJIT in first round. Leung came back after dropping the first set, 2-6, with 6-2 and 12-10 victories. Leung then battled it in a tiebreaker with Fordham’s Ellie Ball, but ultimately fell 6-4, 3-6, 10-8.
The Lions are back in action for the ITA Regionals from October 17-22 in Cambridge, Mass.
