Women's Tennis Captures Singles and Doubles Titles at ITA Northeast Regional
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Columbia women's tennis team captured both the singles and doubles titles at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships on Tuesday. The Lions dominated the Northeast region by advancing an all-Columbia final round in both singles and doubles.
No. 95 Kanika Vaidya earned the singles title by defeating her own doubles teammate, No. 104 Bianca Sanon, by scores of 7-6, 7-6. Later in the day, the Sanon/Vaidya duo would reconnect to battle it out in for the main doubles draw title with teammates Tina Jiang/Crystal Leung, but this time it was Jiang and Leung who came out on top, 8-7 (5).
Sanon and Vaidya first defeated St. Bonaventure’s Brossard and Mara Martinez-Santor by an 8-2 score. They continued their dominance in the second round with an 8-2 win over Ivy League foe Penn’s pair of Stephanie Do and Alex Ion, and kept it going by downing Wan-Yi Sweeting/Katya Asilyev of Boston College, 8-1. In the quarterfinal round, Sanon/Vaidya earned an 8-3 win over Harvard's pair of Spencer Liang/Amy He, and played their way into the finals by defeating the Boston College duo of Jessica Wacnik/Lexi Borr.
The Lions partnership of Jiang and Leung also found success with an 8-2 first round victory over Sanne Louwers and Lisa Maas from New York City rival, LIU Brooklyn. The pair continued with an 8-6 win over Eskenazi/Yapp-Shing from Penn, followed by an 8-6 victory over Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis/Johanna Hyoty of BU to advance to the semis. Jiang/Leung stayed solid in the semifinals with an 8-6 defeat over Annie Sullivan and Madeleine Hamilton of Yale to earn a spot in the final round.
With their victories, Leung/Jiang and Vaidya earned automatic entry into the 2013 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Nov. 7-10 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
