NEW YORK -  The Columbia volleyball team dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Cornell for the second time this season on Saturday afternoon in Levien Gymnasium. The Lions registered the loss by set scores of 28-26, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 9-15.

Columbia (5-12, 3-5 Ivy League) similarly fell in five sets at Cornell (7-11, 3-5 Ivy League) in the Ivy League opener earlier this year.

Six Lions reached double figures on the day, led by sophomore Bailey Springer’s double-double of 17 kills and 14 digs. First-year Zoe Jacobs hit .342 overall with 15 kills, while sophomore Katarina Jovicic swung at a match-high .571 clip, recording 13 kills on just one error in 21 attempts.

First-year Jennifer Petrovich set the offense for the Lions with 36 assists, while senior Colleen Brennan chipped in with another 16. Defensively, Kesi Neblett was strong at the net with seven blocks (two solo), and Molly Winger had a team-high 19 digs.

Cornell's Breanna Wong led all players with 19 kills to go with 16 digs. The Big Red outkilled the Lions by a 73 to 61 margin, however, Columbia did outblock Cornell, 13-10.

It was a tightly contested battle from the start, with the first set score tied on ten occasions and pushed into extra points before Columbia came out on top.

The second set continued as a back-and-forth fight, but Cornell broke free from an 8-8 tie using a 4-0 run and led the rest of the way.

The Big Red carried momentum into the third set, edging the Lions once again to take control of the match, 2-1. However, Columbia came back roaring in the fourth set, swinging at a .342 percentage with six blocks and 16 kills to even the match score and force the deciding set.

Up next, the Lions will depart for a four-match road swing, beginning Friday, Nov. 1 in a 7 p.m. match at Princeton.
