EVANSTON, Ill. – Junior Shane Hughes has advanced to the finals of the 174-pound bracket at the 51st Ken Kraft Midlands Championships with a 5-3 decision over the seventh-seeded Brock Gutches from Southern Oregon. As a team, Columbia is 11th with 52.5 points, just three points shy of Lehigh in 10th.
“I am really proud of Shane’s progress,” remarked Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Carl Fronhofer. “He has done a great job making very specific improvements and they have paid off.”
Tonight’s fourth and final session of the Midlands will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network beginning at 9 p.m. eastern.
Josh Houldsworth will be on the mats again tonight, reaching the fifth-place match in the wrestlebacks at 165 pounds. The ninth-seeded Houldsworth will go up against fifth-seeded Cooper Moore from Northern Iowa. In session three, Houldsworth defeated Harvard’s Devon Gabbo with a 4-3 decision and then pinned Chad Lowman from Grand View in 3:17 before falling in the wrestleback semifinals to Michigan’s Taylor Massa, the third seed.
Also posting a win in session three was Chad Ryan at 157 pounds. Taking on the sixth-seeded Andrew Morse from Northern Illinois, Ryan secured a fall in 5:34 to the wrestleback quarterfinals where he fell to Edinboro’s John Greisheimer.
