New York - The No. 42 men’s tennis will start off the 2014 season with back-to-back home matches starting at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20 against the Marist Red Foxes and the Monmouth Hawks at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
The Lions start the season with two singles players ranked in the ITA Top-125. Winston Lin made the top-10 being ranked 8th, while Ashok Narayana took the 125th slot. Narayana and Max Schnur were ranked 14th in the ITA doubles poll.
The matches on Monday mark the kickoff of the 2014 season for all three teams, but are not the first time any of these teams have played each other this year. All three teams played at the Columbia Classic. Marist and Columbia also met at the Ivy Plus Invitational, while Columbia and Monmouth faced off at the Princeton Invitational and ITA Championships, as well.
Marist currently holds an overall 3-4 singles and 0-4 doubles record against the Lions. Red Foxes’ captain Dalen Klassen, the 2013 MAAC Player of the Year and All-MAAC first team member, goes into Monday with a 5-5 singles record for the year. Klassen has yet to face a Columbia player in a singles match.
Monmouth sent four players to the ITA Regional Championships in October, juniors Victor Pugliese and Freddy Marcinkowski and first-years Bee Kumthonkittikul and Christian Vieira. Pugliese returns to Dick Savitt Tennis Center ranked 19th in the ITA Northeast Regional poll. Pugliese has a 6-3 singles record and defeated Columbia’s Dragos Ignat 6-1, 6-5 at the ITA Championships in October.
