No. 57 Women’s Tennis Caps ITA Kick-Off Classic with 4-0 Sweep of No. 53 Tulane
DURHAM, N.C. – The 57th-ranked Columbia women’s tennis team was back in action Sunday on the final day of the ITA Kick-Off Classic hosted by Duke at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Taking on No. 53 Tulane, the Lions captured a 4-0 sweep of the Green Wave.
No. 20 Crystal Leung and Tina Jiang got things started for Columbia with a 6-2 victory in the No. 2 doubles match against Ipek Birol and Sophie Blom. The tandem of Tiana Takenaga and Ioana Alecsiu clinched the doubles point for the Lions, edging Meredith Maltby and Emily Dvorak, 6-4.
The winning continued in singles for Columbia as No. 75 Kanika Vaidya posted a straight sets win over Birol in the No. 2 match. Jiang followed suit with a 6-1, 6-3 downing of Jacqui Katz in the No. 3 match to put the Lions ahead 3-0.
Alecsiu put the finishing touches on Columbia victory, defeating Margaux Hyman, 6-1, 6-4, in the No. 6 match.
Columbia will host Denver on Jan. 31 at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center in their first home match of the season. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
