HOUSTON – The softball team dropped its season opener, 9-4, to North Dakota State on Friday afternoon. The Lions are right back at it at 8 p.m. when they take on the host Houston.

The Bison opened the scoring in the second inning after a leadoff walk to Jenna Isabel and a pair of ground outs that pushed her to third. Danielle Renner knocked Isabel in with an infield single to give NDSU the early 1-0 edge.

Columbia rallied in the bottom of the third, putting two runners in scoring position off of hits by Macy Shrum and Liz Caggiano. Kayla Shimoda evened things up with a single down the leftfield line to score Shrum. The next batter was Emily Snodgrass, who delivered an RBI single to give the Lions a 2-1 advantage.

In the fifth, the Bison put runners on second and third with one out, leading to a Presley Glaser two-run double to put North Dakota State back on top. Later in the inning, the Bison tacked on an insurance run on a passed ball and exploded for four more runs in the sixth to hold a comfortable 8-2 cushion.

After tacking on one more in the top of the seventh to make it a seven-run ballgame, Columbia strung together three straight hits to set up an Alix Cook double to bring in Snodgrass and Shimoda. However, the Bison recorded the final two outs to put the game away.

Shimoda, Snodgrass and Alix Cook all picked up two hits to lead the offense. Brooke Darling (0-1) took the decision, allowing four runs on five hits in 4.2 innings to go with three strikeouts.
