ATLANTA – Tina JiangIoana Alecsiu and Crystal Leung picked up singles wins Saturday at Georgia State for the Lions, but the Panthers took the doubles point and three singles matches to capture the victory, 4-3.

GSU got out early lead with an 8-2 win in the No. 2 doubles match, but the Lions bounced back with No. 32 Bianca Sanon and Kanika Vaidya capturing an 8-6 victory over No. 33 Abigail Tere-Apisah and Masa Grgan in the top match.

The deciding match would fall in favor of GSU just marginally, as Linn Timmermann and Chaimaa Roudami edged Alecsiu and Tiana Takenaga, 8-7, to put the Panthers up 1-0.

Jiang evened the team score at 1-1 with a straight sets victory in the No. 3 position against Marcia Tere-Apisah, 6-2, 6-2. Grgan fired right back for the Panthers, taking the No. 2 match, 6-4, 6-4, putting GSU back up, 2-1.

Maryna Kozachenko extended GSU’s lead to 3-1 with a two-set win in the No. 5 match. Alecsiu closed the gap for Columbia in the No. 6 slot, taking down Roudami with consecutive 6-3 sets.

The top match was a back-and-forth affair with No. 33 A. Tere-Apisah winning the first set, but Columbia’s Bianca Sanon came right back with a win in the second set by an identical score. The decisive third set would go the direction of Tere Apisah by a score of 6-3, giving the Panthers the 4-3 team victory.

The Lions will return to New York for three straight home matches beginning against No. 52 Kansas State on Friday, Feb. 28.
