ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The 24th-ranked Columbia men’s tennis team started its Spring Break trip off on a good note Saturday afternoon, dominating No. 41 Michigan on the road, 6-1.

Doubles action went back-and-forth with the Lions capturing the No. 3 match and the Wolverines taking the No. 2 match. Winston Lin and Mike Vermeer got on the board first with an 8-3 trouncing of Alex Petrone and Michael Zhu. No. 52 Shaun Bernstein and Kevin Wong evened it up for Michigan, taking the No. 2 match, 8-6.

That left a top-25 battle between No. 12 Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur from Columbia and No. 22 Alex Buzzi and Barrett Franks from Michigan to decide the doubles point. The match was closely contested, but the Lions top tandem came away with the victory in a tiebreaker, 8-7(3).

Singles action went much smoother for the Lions, capturing straight-set wins in the No. 6, 5 and 3 matches to seal the team win early on. Vermeer was the first to finish up, knocking off Franks, 6-3, 6-4. Schnur followed right behind with his own 6-3, 6-2 victory over Buzzi in the No. 5 match. Dragos Ignat clinched the match for Columbia with a 7-6(5), 6-2 win against Bernstein in the No. 3 match.

Fourteenth-ranked Winston Lin made it 5-0 in favor of Columbia with a three-set victory against Vlad Stefan, 6-0, 2-6, 6-2. Justin Rossi notched Michigan’s only point with a come-from-behind win in the No. 4 match, but Narayana closed it out on a high note for the Lions, winning the No. 2 match in a tiebreaker, 6-7(3), 6-2, 1-0(7).

Columbia will head south from Ann Arbor to the Lone Star State to take on SMU and TCU later this week. The Lions are in Dallas Tuesday to take on the Mustangs and then Fort Worth Thursday to face the Horned Frogs.
