OKLAHOMA CITY – The Columbia wrestling team was represented by a trio of grapplers in the wrestle-backs of session three at the 2014 NCAA Championships Friday morning, and despite three hard-fought bouts, the Lions fell in each bout.
First-year Markus Scheidel was on the mats first for the Lions, taking on Blaise Butler, the 10-seed from Virginia at 157 pounds. The two battled to a scoreless first period, but Butler took control in the second with a takedown at the 1:17 mark and then worked on the ground for a three-point nearfall to go up 5-1. Scheidel would score an escape before the end of the second period, but Butler fired back with his own escape and another takedown to begin the third period. Each grappler would add one more point to his tally, giving Butler the 9-3 decision.
Scheidel completes his first NCAA Tournament with a 1-2 record and concludes an outstanding rookie campaign as a Lion with a 27-12 mark.
Senior Josh Houldsworth was up next at 165 pounds, taking on Minnesota’s Daniel Zilverberg, the 15-seed. Similar to Scheidel’s bout, the first three minutes passed without any scoring before Zilverberg got on the board with an escape and takedown in the second period. The Golden Gopher scored another takedown in the third period and added the riding time point for a 6-0 decision.
Houldsworth’s Columbia career comes to a close with a career record of 61-47 and two NCAA Tournament appearances.
The final Lion to wrestle Friday morning was junior Shane Hughes at 174 pounds. Illinois’ Tony Dallago jumped out to an early 7-1 lead on Hughes with two takedowns and a three-point nearfall. Hughes scored his own two-point nearfall midway through the second period and was attempting a pin when Dallago scored a reversal and his own fall at 4:13.
Hughes ends the season with a 21-10 record after going 1-2 at his first NCAA Tournament.
