Women's Rowing Competes in Three Races Before Winds Halt Clemson Invite

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Clemson women's rowing coach Rob Tenenbaum invited 20 schools to the Clemson Invite. Unfortunately, the winds came, too, as a highly unwelcome guest, and caused the huge competition to be stopped after Saturday morning racing.
"The wind was really blowing," Columbia women's coach Scott Ramsey said. "The officials stopped it when there were whitecaps on the lake."
The Lions competed in three races before the event was stopped. Their best effort was the varsity eights event, which featured such geographically diverse institutions as Texas, Gonzaga, Tennessee, and Oklahoma.
They got off to a good start, slowed down somewhat, but then came on to finish strongly, only fractions of a second behind the host school, Clemson. Oregon State won the race in 7:08.40, followed closely by Gonzaga of Spokane, Washington, in 7:11.0. The Tigers were third in 7:17.10, and the Lions were next in 7:17.9. Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas followed.
"We rowed a really good piece," Ramsey said.
Racing begins Sunday at 7:45 a.m.
