NEW YORK - Even though the college season is over, Columbia’s fencers have been busy this month. Margaret Lu, Sara Taffel, Mason Speta, Jackie Dubrovich and Geoffrey Loss all brought home medals from Junior World Championships and USA Fencing National Championships.

Lu and Dubrovich competed together at Junior Worlds as a part of the U.S. Women’s Foil Team. The team brought gold back from Bulgaria, bringing the Lions’ medal count to two. Speta earned silver in the women’s epee competition, while Loss brought home a bronze from the men’s sabre competition.

Just a few short days later, Lu and Taffel flew to Minnesota for the USA Fencing National Championships. Lu, seeded at the top, claimed the third gold medal of her career at USA Fencing Nationals after defeating teammate Taffel in the final round. Taffel controlled the bout into the third period with a 12-7 lead. Lu paced herself and scored the winning touch during the overtime period.

“It feels great," Lu said. "I almost thought I didn’t have this one and I almost didn’t. My teammate and friend, Sara Taffel, fenced really well. I watched her in the bout before and she looked really on. “But I just took it one touch at a time. I tried to not think about the outcome and stay focused on the process and, little by little, 12-8 became 12-12 and then we went to priority. I stayed focused and was able to get that touch.”

The addition of Lu’s gold and Taffel’s silver medals brought the Columbians’ medal count up to six.  Michael Costin finished sixth in the USA Fencing Nationals.
