Caroline Nichols Wins Gold With Team USA at Champions Challenge

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND – Caroline Nichols, a member of Columbia field hockey’s coaching staff the past two seasons, earned a Gold Medal at the Champions Challenge with the U.S. National Team.

The U.S. defeated Ireland, 3-1, Sunday in the finals of the event. It was the first time the U.S. has won in the eight times the event has been contested; the U.S. finished second each in each of the last two Champions Challenges.

Nichols, who has 152 caps under her belt, played in all six contests and tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 35th minute in the gold medal game. She also scored a goal against Ireland in pool play on April 30 from her defensive position.

"We are incredibly happy for Caroline Nichols and the entire USA hockey program,” Columbia head coach Marybeth Freeman said. “With a new vision from head coach Craig Parnham, USA hockey seems as enthused as ever and the energy of the group looks to be moving in a positive direction. Congrats again to all the players and coaches of the USA hockey program!”
