NEW YORK - Riza Zalameda, the assistant coach of the Columbia women’s tennis team, and Columbia men’s tennis senior standout Max Schnur have partnered up for the US Open National Playoffs – Mixed Double Championships this weekend at The Connecticut Tennis Center in New Haven, Connecticut.
The pair is one of 12 teams that will take the court vying for a wild card spot in the main draw of the 2014 US Open mixed doubles main draw, held Aug. 25 through Sept. 8 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. The 12 duos advanced to the tournament, which is held in conjunction with the Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies, a 2014 Emirates Airline US Open Series event, through their respective sectional qualifying tournaments, held in 13 different USTA sections across the country. Zalameda and Schnur return to Yale’s Tennis Center as the USTA New England Mixed Doubles Champion after capturing the title on the Bulldogs’ courts June 12-15.
Zalameda enters competition with the most extensive US Open resume out of her competitors. A former NCAA doubles champion and Top -100 doubles player, the UCLA product has competed in the US Open women’s doubles main draw five times, reaching the second round in 2004 and 2008.
Zalameda’s teammate Schnur captured the 2013 National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship and earned All-Ivy League doubles first team honorees last season. The Richmond, Virginia, native helped the Lions advance to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the first time in program history and win their 11th Ivy League Title. Schnur concluded his junior season in Morningside Heights ranked 18th in the ITA doubles rankings with partner Ashok Narayana.
