NEW YORK – The Columbia fencing team came away with a perfect 6-0 record at the Columbia Invitational Friday night. The Lions men (8-0) topped Stevens, 22-5, NJIT, 14-13, and Johns Hopkins (20-7). The women (8-1) knocked off Stevens, 21-6, NJIT, 22-5, and Johns Hopkins 24-3.

Both men’s and women’s sabre squads swept Stevens on their way to decisive victories. The trio of Michael Costin, Calvin Liang and Elijah Granet guided the men’s squad to a 22-5 win over the Ducks. In women’s sabre it was Anastasia Ivanoff, Lena Johnson and Ilana Solomon went 9-0 to give the Lions a 21-6 triumph in the opening match of the night.

NJIT turned in a 6-3 win in foil to start the men’s middle contest, but the Lions came through with a 5-4 win in sabre to set the tone for a dramatic battle in epee. The Lions dropped their first two bouts, but rallied to earn the next six decisions to give Columbia its second one-point victory over the Highlanders this season. Mick Yanamaka rattled off three wins, including the match-clincher in his final turn, to spark the group.

The women started off strong in foil, posting an 8-1 triumph to set the tone against the Highlanders with Margaret Lu, making her first appearance with Columbia since 2015, and Ester Schreiber came through unscathed. The women’s sabre posted another clean run through NJIT to go on for the 22-5 win.

To close things out, the women dominated Johns Hopkins with Lu, Ester Schreiber, Quinn Crumm, Katie Angen, Audrey Yun and Solomon each went 3-0 to help Columbia coast to the win. The men also finished strong with a 20-7 triumph over the Blue Jays, highlighted by 3-0 marks from Albert Zhang, Jarett Poliner, Alexander Walker III and Andrew Doddo.
