EVANSTON, Ill. - Tyrel White coasted into the quarterfinals, while he and Garrett Ryan will wrestle on day two of the Midlands Championships at Northwestern University.

White opened up with a 5-4 victory over Purdue's Dylan Lydy, before topping Iowa's Joseph Guenther, 3-2, in his second match of the day. In the third round, White got by Grand View's Grant Henderson to advance to the quarters for a match with No. 9 ranked Chad Walsh from Rider.

Against Walsh, White dropped a 13-7 decision to the tournament's No. 2 seed. Today, White will open up with a match against Andrew Fogarty from North Dakota, who came in as the No. 8 seed. Fogarty narrowly escaped South Dakota's Luke Zilverberg with a 6-4 (SV-1) victory to meet White.

In the heavyweight bracket, Garrett Ryan won his first match in an impressive 9-0 major decision of Zachary Chakonis from Northwestern. Ryan went toe-to-toe with Michael Boykin from NC State, but dropped a 3-1 (SV-1) decision to set up a consolation bracket match with Central Michigan's Newton Smerchek.

Ryan impressed in the match with Smerchek, rolling to a 7-1 victory to meet a familiar foe, Harvard's Nickolas Gajdzik. It took a sudden victory period, but the Columbia heavyweight won, 3-1, to set up a bout with Northwestern's Conan Jennings. So far in the tournament, Jennings beat two seeded wrestlers before falling to the tournament's two seed, Arizona State's Tanner Hall, in the championship bracket.

Jacob Macalolooy came away with three victories in the 141-pound consolation bracket, before dropping his second match on the first day. With a 6-0 decision over Purdue's Austin Nash, Macalolooy set up a match with No. 13 ranked Cole Martin from Wisconsin, who did not wrestle due to a medical forefit. The junior was then knocked out of the tournament by South Dakota's Henry Pohlmeyer in a first period pin.

Austin Coniker, Alec KellyTyler Ponte, and Dan Reed and all came away with day one victories, before dropping their second match and bowing out of the tournament.
