PHILADELPHIA, PA — Columbia men’s fencing (4-1) claimed a share of the Ivy League Championship with a 15-12 win over Princeton, while the women (5-1) fell just shy of the title as they fell to Princeton in the deciding match.

MEN’S RECAP - IVY LEAGUE CHAMPS! (4-1)

Columbia rebounded from their loss to Penn yesterday with three straight wins at Day 2 to claim the title. The Lions went into the final match at 3-1, facing the undefeated Princeton Tigers. Up 13- 10, captain Porter Hesslegrave won his final epee bout against Wesley Johnson to notch the deciding 14th point for Columbia.

Princeton and Penn also finished 4-1, marking the second straight year that the men’s Ivy League title was split between three schools. Columbia won the title for the fourth straight time.

It was an exciting day from start to finish on the men’s side.

In their first match of the day, Columbia trailed 11-3 to Harvard, with dwindling hopes at a shot at the title. The Lions then rallied to win 11 of their final 13 bouts to earn the come from behind victory. With the match score tied at 13-13, and the epee bout tied at 3-3, second team All-Ivy fencer Gabe Canaux got the clinching touch over the Crimson's Albert Chien to seal the win, and his teammates piled on top of him.

Columbia’s match against Yale followed a similar trend. The score went back and forth through out the match, and it again came down to the final bout, with the score tied at 13 all. This time it was Sam Moelis who proved to be the hero, defeating the Bulldog's Aiden Ahn 4-3, and giving the Lions the 14-13 win.

WOMEN'S RECAP (5-1)

Columbia fell one bout short of the Ivy League title, as they fell to Princeton in the final match of the day, 14-13. Both schools went in undefeated to the final match, and it all came down the final bout between Columbia’s Amy Tong and Princeton’s epee Ivy Champion and Olympian Kat Holmes. Tong fell 5-3 and Princeton claimed the title.

Columbia started off the day with a convincing win over Harvard, 16-11.  Foil and epee both went 6-3, including a 3-0 performance from first team All-Ivy selection Katie Angen.

The Lions then defeated Yale, 21-6. The foil squad, including Iman Blow and first team All-Ivy selection Sara Taffel and Individual Ivy foil champion Margaret Lu went undefeated.
