2017 NCAA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
MARCH 16-18 | SCOTTRADE CENTER | ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI
NCAAs

NEW YORK - For the second time in three years, the Scottrade Center in St. Louis will play host to the NCAA Wrestling Championships, with a pair of Columbia juniors taking part in the three-day tournament.

COLUMBIA QUALIFIERS
For the third consecutive year, both Garrett Ryan and Tyrel White have qualified for the NCAA Championships. After winning the heavyweight bracket at the EIWA Championships, Ryan earned an auto bid for the first time in his career, previously earning at-large bids his first two seasons. White claimed fourth at the EIWAs for the third time in his career, picking up his third automatic bid to the NCAAs.

COVERAGE
Every mat in every session will have coverage on ESPN3 and ESPNU, up until the Championship semifinals and finals, which are both aired live on ESPN. Friday’s Championship semifinals get under way at 8 p.m. EST, the same time as the Saturday night Championship finals.

A SEASON AGO
2017 marks the third consecutive year Ryan and White have qualified for the NCAA Championships, with both athletes picking up victories for the first time at the tournament last year. Ryan went 1-2 with a win over Anthony Pelusi from Franklin & Marshall, while White enjoyed wins against American’s Mitchell Wightman and Gardner-Webb’s Austin Trott.

FIRST UP
The No. 16 seed in the heavyweight bracket, Ryan, will see a rematch with Central Michigan’s Newton Smerchek in his first round match, bout 156. Back at the Midlands Championships, Ryan handed Smercheck a 7-1 defeat. White will be one of the first competitors in the field to compete, taking on Luke Zilverberg from South Dakota State in the pigtail round at 165, which will be the first meeting between the two juniors.

AGAINST THE FIELD
Ryan enters St. Louis with a 6-5 record this season against heavyweights who have qualified for the tournament, while White sits at 2-8 against the 165-pound qualifiers.
