PRINCETON, N.J. – For the second consecutive week, two Columbia baseball players were selected as Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week. Senior Kyle Bartelman gained Player of the Week, while Julian Bury was tabbed Rookie of the Week after helping the Lions catch Penn in the standings to force a one-game playoff this weekend against the Quakers Saturday.
Bartelman continued his torrid offensive pace in Ancient Eight play, hitting a team-high .455 and 10 RBI in five games. He homered in three consecutive games to start the Penn series and drove in at least one run in each contest. After a 2-for-5 performance in a midweek game at Rutgers, the Lions' second baseman delivered in a big way on his senior day. He homered in both contests and went 4-for-5 with five RBI in a must-win game two. Bartelman set the tone the next day, belting a two-run blast in the first inning of the opener in Philadelphia and drove in a key run to aid another Columbia rally in the nightcap to force the decisive playoff game this weekend.
Bury was a catalyst at the top of the order for the Lions, hitting .450 with nine runs scored, three doubles and four RBI. Additionally, he made to diving catches in rightfield during the Penn series. Bury went 3-for-7 with four runs scored and four runs batted against the Quakers on Friday. He followed that up by going 5-for-9 with three runs in Columbia's doubleheader sweep in Philadelphia.
Ian Burns and Randell Kanemaru earned spots on the Weekly Honor Roll. Burns made two appearances and allowed just one hit in 7.0 innings worked and earned the victory in the Penn series finale. Kanemaru batted .429 with three doubles and nine RBI to continue his outstanding junior campaign.
Columbia and Penn's Gehrig Division playoff game is slated for May 6 at 1 p.m. Admission is free. The contest will also be broadcast live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
