NEW YORK - The Columbia wrestling team put up four victories, but was clipped against Binghamton, 20-14, today at the University Gymnasium. With the loss, the Lions sit at 2-6 overall after the weekend split.
The Bearcats got off to a fast start, winning the first pair of matches before tight victories at 141 and 149. At 141, Joe Russ was able to come back and earn a late takedown to escape JP Ascolese, 8-7, before Binghamton was paced by Frankie Garcia's 3-1 victory over Jacob Macalolooy, thanks to a third period takedown in the 149-pound bout.
Trailing 13-0, Columbia got on the board when Markus Scheidel earned a 19-7 major decision against Tristan Rifanburg. The 165-pound bout went to the Bearcats, as Vincent DePrez picked up a major decision of his own against Columbia's Laurence Kosoy, before Tyrel White bouced back with a 10-4 win over Anthony Lombardo at 174.
Andrew Psomas was up to the test against No. 12 ranked Steve Schneider at 184, but was unable to record a takedown during a 6-1 loss, as Binghamton clinched the match at 20-7 with two bouts remaining.The Lions were able to come away with the final two matches, as Michael Bulkin edged Alex Melikian, 3-2, before Garrett Ryan handed Sean Dee a 20-9 major decision.
Columbia is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 20, when Drexel visits the Blue Gym in a 7 p.m. dual, which can be seen on the Ivy League Network.
