MELBOURNE, Australia—Columbia 2018 women’s tennis signee Akanksha Bhan advanced to the third round of the Australian Open Juniors Tuesday in Melbourne, Australia. In Tuesday’s third round, Bhan dropped a 7-6, 6-0 match to No. 6 seed Joanna Garland of Chinese Taipei.


Bhan, who has already signed her enrollment paperwork and has been approved to attend Columbia, will enroll in September, 2018. She was announced as an Australian Open Junior qualifier in December, 2017.


Bhan advanced to Singles Main Draw competition with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over Australia’s Lisa Mays in the first round and a 6-2, 6-4 win over Japan’s Rina Saigo in the second round. She is also competing in doubles with Japan’s Sakura Hosogi. The duo dropped a 6-1, 7-6 (2) match to Switzerland’s Simona Waltert and China’s Wang Xiyu  in the Australian Open’s round of 32.


Bhan is currently ranked as the No. 123 player in the International Tennis Federation World Junior Rankings. She is the No. 1 Under-18 tennis player in the All-India Tennis Association after claiming India’s Junior National Hard and Clay Court titles. She attends Udgam School in Ahmedabad, India.
