NEW YORK—Columbia Athletics is seeking nominations for its Class of 2018 Athletics Hall of Fame class, which is scheduled to be inducted at the University’s bi-annual banquet on Thursday, Oct. 18,
The Columbia University Athletics Hall of Fame was founded to honor, pay tribute and perpetuate the memory of those individuals who, either through participation, support or interest, have made outstanding contributions in the field of intercollegiate athletics and who have helped bring recognition, honor, distinction
The Columbia Athletics Hall of Fame nomination process for the Class of 2018 (and future classes) incorporates changes to the Athletics Hall of Fame Constitution, ratified earlier this year:
--The Modern Era (applicable for male student-athletes and teams) now constitutes a rolling 50-year period, preceding the induction year, meaning that starting with the Class of 2018, the Modern Era category will comprise those student-athletes from 1968-69 forward; The Heritage Era (applicable for student-athletes and teams) will comprise student-athletes/teams whose competition ended prior to 1968-69.
--Eligibility for induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame now requires 10 years to have elapsed since the end of competition for individual student-athletes and teams.
--Athletics Staff are now eligible for induction immediately upon professional retirement (or death); the five-year waiting period still exists for those coaches/administrators/staff who are still employed in collegiate athletics.
--While attendance at the induction ceremony is greatly encouraged, individuals selected in the former student-athlete categories may accept induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame in absentia.
