NEW YORK – Columbia senior Tyrel White earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Wrestling Championships today, joining teammates Markus Scheidel and Garrett Ryan who qualified during the EIWA Championships.
The trio of seniors head to Cleveland from March 15-17 for the Division I NCAA Championships, as all three have become NCAA qualifiers for the fourth time in their career.
White claimed sixth place at the EIWA Championships last weekend in the 174-pound bracket, missing an automatic berth to the NCAAs by one place. The North Bomoseen, Vermont, native wrapped-up the regular season at 24-12, including a 12-4 mark in dual matches, and a 9-1 record during EIWA duals. White won a pair of matches at 165 pounds during his sophomore season at the NCAA Championships, and was an automatic qualifier at that weight during his first three seasons. In his first match at the NCAAs, White battles Army's Ben Harvey in the pigtail round.
Scheidel earned an automatic NCAA bid last weekend when he won the EIWA Championship at 157 pounds, defeating Princeton’s Mike D’Angelo in the final bout, 4-3. The senior and Bay Village, Ohio, native will have the home crowd behind him in Cleveland, where he brings a 19-2 record. Scheidel has 104 career wins, including five at the NCAA Championships. The No. 10 seed at 157 takes on Andrew Shomers from Edinboro in the first round on Thursday.
Ryan finished the regular season at 30-6 and posted his 100th career win during the EIWA Championships. The heavyweight finished fourth at the EIWAs to pick up an automatic bid, and is coming off of a 2017 Championship performance in his weight class. The Scottsdale, Arizona, native has two career wins at the NCAAs in his three previous appearances. Ryan takes on No. 8 Tanner Hall from Arizona State in his opening bout.
