NEW YORK - Three members of the Columbia wrestling team travel to Cleveland for the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships, which get under way Thursday at Quicken Loans Arena. Seniors Markus Scheidel (157), Garrett Ryan (HWT), Tyrel White (174) all will make the trip for the fourth straight time in their career.

A SEASON AGO
White and Ryan earned automatic bids to the 2017 NCAAs, as White finished fourth in the EIWA at 165, and Ryan became Columbia’s first conference champion since 2013. Ryan went 1-2 last year at the NCAAs, while White was knocked out on the first day with a pair of losses at 165. 

2018 EIWA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Along with White and Ryan, the Lions make it three returning NCAA Qualifiers, as Markus Scheidel is back after sitting out last season. The trio have all qualified for the NCAA Championships during their first three years. Scheidel claimed the 157-pound title at the 2018 EIWA Championships, leading a pack of five podium performances. Ryan also earned an automatic bid with a fourth-place outing at heavyweight, while White was sixth and scored an at-large bid at 174.

MARKUS SCHEIDEL
After sitting out last season, Scheidel came back with a vengeance at 157, going 19-2 overall and rattling off a 10-match winning streak in the middle of the season. The Bay Village, Ohio native is currently in the midst of a seven-match streak, and scored bonus points in six of his 21 matches. Scheidel holds a 5-6 career mark at the NCAA Championships. He faces Andrew Shomers from Edinboro in his first match on Thursday.

GARRETT RYAN
With a fourth-place performance at the EIWAs, Ryan tallied his fourth NCAA Championship nod, ending the year at 30-6. The Scottsdale, Arizona, native went 16-1 during the dual season, and scored bonus points in 17 of 36 bouts. Ryan is 2-6 during his NCAA Championship career, and will face Arizona State’s Tanner Hall in the opening round.

TYREL WHITE
After waiting out an at-large selection, White makes his return to the NCAAs holding a 24-12 record after bumping up to 174 this season. The North Bomoseen, Vermont, native is 2-6 for his career at the NCAAs, and is paired with Army’s Ben Harvey during Thursday’s pigtail round.
