NEW YORK – Columbia University junior women's soccer player Sophie Reiser has been invited to train at the U-23 U.S. Women’s National Team camp, to be held in Portland, Ore. The reigning Ivy League Player of the Year was one of 24 players selected for the camp, which will run from April 11-19.

“It is a wonderful honor for Sophie to be selected, but one I believe she truly deserves,” head coach Kevin McCarthy said. “Her selection is also a great reflection on her teammates and program. It is another example of Columbia University Women's Soccer being one of the model women's soccer programs in the nation.”

The camp will feature training sessions with the best collegiate players in the nation, as well as contests against Oregon State on April 14 and the University of Portland, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2008 Women’s College Cup, on April 18.

Reiser turned in one of the top individual performances in Columbia women’s soccer history in 2008, becoming the first player ever to be named to an All-American team. The fourth-team Soccer Buzz All-America selection, who was named the Northeast Region Player of the Year, was also bestowed the honor of first team Academic All-America by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Shifting from her natural center-midfield position to an attacking forward position proved to be beneficial for the Lions this past year, as Reiser led the Ivy League and ranked 10th in the nation in points per game at 2.06. The junior closed the year on a 13-game point scoring streak and scored career-bests in goals (12) and points (35), while tying her career-high in assists with 11. Columbia closed out the season with an 11-4-2 record and had the second-highest winning percentage in program history.
