ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Facing a three-stroke deficit heading into the final round, the Columbia University men's golf team came from behind and overtook Penn on the last hole of the day to take home its second consecutive Ivy League Championship on Sunday at the Atlantic City Country Club. The Lions carded a 284 to sneak past the Quakers by one stroke in a matchup that went down to the wire.
With the victory, Columbia advances to its second straight NCAA Men's Golf Championship, which will take place on May 14-16.
The Lions and Quakers took turns taking leads throughout the day, and both separated themselves from the rest of the field. Dartmouth, who entered Sunday just a stroke off the pace, finished in third place at 864 (+16), and was a relative non-factor down the stretch.
The team competition would ultimately come down to the last hole of play. Columbia and Penn were tied at +10, and four of five team members on both sides had concluded their rounds with the final group still on the course. First-year Brendan Doyle and the Quakers' Scotty Williams were the two competitors left to play the ninth hole (all men's teams started on the 10th tee).
With the championship on the line, Doyle calmly made par on the par-four, while Williams settled for a bogey to give the Lions their second straight Ivy title.
Sophomore Austin Quinten had the best individual round for Columbia on Sunday, closing with a two-under par 68. Both Quinten and Doyle finished the tournament in a tie for eighth place. The top overall finisher for the Lions was sophomore Clark Granum, who totaled a 213 over three days to close in a tie for fifth and earn All-Ivy League recognition for the second consecutive year.
Playing in his final Ivy League Championship, senior Chris Arkin was steady all weekend and closed with a one-over 71 on day three to tie for 14th. Classmate Philippe Fossaert finished the championship tied for 29th at 226.
