One of the senior members of the Columbia Athletics Department, Albert “Al” Carlson began his tenure at Columbia in 1978 and currently supervises many of the daily business and administrative operations of the Dodge Physical Fitness Center.
As Associate Athletics Director for Finance and Administration and Chief Operating Officer, he acts as liaison between the Athletics Department and a number of University departments, including Human Resources, Affirmative Action, the General Counsel, Public Safety, Purchasing, Telecommunications and the controller’s office. He has overseen several capital projects, and in 1991 served as Interim Director of Athletics.
Despite all his responsibilities, Carlson has found time to serve as president, and now past president, of the College Athletic Business Managers Association, which named him the 1994 Manager of the Year, its highest honor.
From 1990 until 2005, Carlson served as head coach of the Columbia men and women’s golf teams. His men’s team won Columbia’s first Ivy League golf title in 1999.
A native of Shelton, Conn., Carlson attended the University of Connecticut, graduating in 1972. He also earned his M.B.A. from UConn.
