Ken Torrey
Associate Athletics Director

 

Dr. Ken Torrey came to Columbia University in 1973 as director of intramural and club sports. He was named Supervisor of Physical Education Programs in 1975, and subsequently was promoted to Director of Physical Education in 1996. Then in 2005, Dr. Torrey was named Associate Athletics Director for Physical Education. In his present position, he supervises Columbia’s required and voluntary physical education programs, personal training, and the Intramural/Club Sports program. 

He also served 14 years as coach of the Columbia club squash team, and was a long-time officer in the National Intercollegiate Squash Racquets Association, including a term as president of the NISRA.

In 2008, Columbia's newly created head squash coach position was endowed in Torrey's honor upon his retirement.  Thanks to a lead gift by Annette '83BC and Geoff Grant '82SEAS, the title of the program’s head coach will be The Kenneth W. Torrey Head Coach of Squash upon Torrey's retirement. Until then, the title will be The Columbia Squash Alumni and Friends Head Coach of Squash. 

A native of Babylon, New York, Torrey attended Cortland State College. He was an All-America baseball player at Cortland, and received a bachelor of arts in physical education in 1971, and a master’s degree in 1973. He also earned a master’s from Columbia Teachers College, and in 1991 received his Ed.D. in applied physiology from Teachers College.

Torrey and his wife, Chris, who works for Unilever, live in New City, N.Y. They have two children, a son, Brian, who is married and lives in Santa Rosa, Calif., and a daughter, Lindsay, a 2001 graduate of Columbia College.
