Thank you for your support of Columbia Athletics with your annual gift to our varsity sports programs or The Fund For Excellence. Your participation helps us enhance the student-athlete experience, recruit talented student-athletes, recruit and retain outstanding coaches, and launch other initiatives that promote excellence throughout the Department.
You will be pleased to know that our vision of excellence in Athletics has been widely embraced at the University and there is a real sense of the excitement surrounding Columbia’s renewed commitment to Athletics.
We hope that you will increase your support this fiscal year to help us build on our momentum. Every gift makes a difference to achieving our standards of quality and excellence with our top priorities: People, Places, and Programs. For more information, contact Katie Day, Associate Director, Athletics Annual Giving at 212-851-4025 or kad57@columbia.edu.
People
Our people are key to our success. Your support enables us to invest in recruiting great coaches to Columbia, coaches who recruit, train, and lead the next generation of Columbia student-athletes to athletics success. Over the past four years, we successfully recruited several top coaches to Columbia, including Norries Wilson (football), Paul Nixon (women’s basketball), Jon Wilson (volleyball) and Kevin Anderson (men’s soccer), and hired full-time coaches for baseball (Brett Boretti), men's golf (Rich Mueller) and women's golf (Kari Williams). Through the generosity of Andrew F. Barth ’83CC, ’85BUS, the first fully-endowed head coaching position has been established at Columbia—the Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling.
Places
We are pursuing facilities projects to bring Columbia up to the standards of our peer institutions. These projects will be based on need, funding, and feasibility. The University has recently stepped up with new funds for facilities, including the installation of a new playing surface for football and lacrosse at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium, the refurbishing of off-campus office space for athletics administrators to create additional space for our sports programs in the Dodge Fitness Center, the creation of a new artificial playing surface appropriate for field hockey at Baker Athletics Complex, and the upgrade of Robertson Field, thanks in large part to Hal Robertson '81SEAS. Gifts from alumni, friends, and fans like you will be pivotal to further facilities initiatives like upgrading the Baker Athletics Complex and modernizing the Dodge Physical Fitness Center.
Programs
Annual gifts, like yours, serve as vital sources of support for Departmental operations.
Over the past year, gifts were used to increase recruiting and operating budgets for our 29 varsity sports programs and increase the per diem allowance for student-athlete meals while on the road. We are also seeking ways to enhance the student-athlete experience.
This year, Columbia launched a pilot program that permits Columbia student-athletes to better schedule their classes around practice and competition commitments. Your support makes all the difference to what we accomplish!
Your continual generosity is critical to our ongoing success. As you know, the University embarked on a new fundraising campaign in September 2006. The Columbia Campaign is very important for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education. Your commitment is key.
On behalf of our 800 student-athletes who compete for Columbia, our head and assistant coaches, and our athletics administrators – thank you for your support of Columbia Athletics.
Please consider setting up a recurring credit card gift, using this form. You'll be amazed when you see what a big cumulative effect a modest monthly gift can have.
Planned Gifts
For some donors, an outright gift is not the best means of achieving their philanthropic or estate-planning goals. Carefully planned gifts can offer significant estate-tax and income benefits, while at the same time allowing donors to make larger gifts to the University than would otherwise be possible. To learn more about Columbia's gift-planning strategies, please explore the links above.
The Office of Planned Giving can also assist you with gifts of securities, gifts of real estate, or gifts of other personal property.
