NEW YORK – The Columbia field hockey team finished non-conference play in style, recording a 4-0 victory over Lehigh Sunday afternoon. The Lions (8-7) took the lead five minutes in and never looked back as they picked up their fifth home victory and third shutout of the season.
Columbia put together a dominant first half, outshooting the Mountain Hawks (4-12) 15-0 and took a 1-0 lead into the locker room. Lindsay Ladas recorded her first of the season, picking up a loose ball on a rebound in the fifth minute to give the Lions an early advantage.
Maeve Doherty notched her 10th goal of the season and dished out an assist to help the Lions’ effectively put the game away early in the second half. The senior blasted a shot off a long rebound from the left wing to extend the margin to 2-0 in the 39th minute and slipped a nice feed to Lauren Crane, who found the back of the net for the third time this season.
Crane made a head’s up play to set up the final Lions goal in the 67th minute. On the end line, she centered the ball that went off a defender’s foot, which would have resulted in a corner if Lehigh could gain an advantage. Instead, a wide-open Jennifer Trieschman alertly slid the ball in from the left post for her sixth of the season.
Katie Dempsey only needed to make two saves and Doherty batted a ball away from the goal line out of midair for her eighth defensive save. The three shutouts are the most in a single-season for the program since 2008 when the Lions recorded four clean sheets.
Columbia is back in action next Saturday, October 28 when Yale comes to town. Game time is set for 1 p.m. Admission is free and the game will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Network.
