NEW YORK – The dual season is slated to get under way Friday for the Columbia wrestling team, when the Lions travel to Deerfield Beach, Florida for the South Beach Duals.
Columbia is scheduled to wrestle No. 18 Rider (2-1) and Kent State (6-2) on Friday, before matches against No. 16 Minnesota (3-1) and North Dakota State (1-4) on Saturday. This weekend will provide the first-ever matches for Columbia against Kent State, Minnesota, and North Dakota State, while the wrestling program has posted a 4-1 record in duals against Rider. The Lions look to improve on a 3-12 mark from a season ago in dual matches.
So far during the 2017-18 slate, Columbia competed at four tournaments, including the most recent Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, which took place Dec. 1-2. Out in Las Vegas, heavyweight Garrett Ryan posted three wins, while his senior classmates Tyrel White (165) and Jacob Macalolooy (149) were both able to win a pair of matches.
The three seniors all placed at the Navy Classic back on Nov. 18, with Ryan leading the way during a second place finish. In the season opener at the Binghamton Classic, Ryan claimed the heavyweight title, while White and Macalolooy were both runners-up in their division.
