NEW YORK - In the first of four matches during Spring Break, the No. 11 ranked Columbia men's tennis team plays No. 24 Baylor today at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
The Lions also battle SMU on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m., before taking on Texas-Arlington on Friday, and No. 33 Texas Christian on Sunday.
Columbia enters the weekend at 8-1 overall, coming off a 7-0 sweep of Monmouth on Saturday, March 3. The lone loss of the spring came to No. 4 Georgia in the first round of the ITA Indoors, when the Lions fought back to defeat No. 9 Oklahoma State along with the 12th-ranked Bears. Victor Pham recently slid two spots to No. 9 in the ITA singles rankings, ahead of No. 38 Jackie Tang. In doubles play, Tang and Pham are ranked No. 8, ahead of No. 23 Jack Lin and William Matheson.
Baylor most recently topped UCF last Monday, 4-3, to improve to 11-3 overall this spring. In singles play, Johannes Schretter is ranked No. 42, Bjoern Petersen holds a No. 66 ranking, and Matias Soto came in at No. 123. Baylor boasts the No. 2 ranked doubles team in the country with Will Little and Schretter, while Petersen and Jimmy Bendeck are ranked No. 56.
SMU enters spring break at 5-8 overall, having droped their previous two matches to Oklahoma State and Memphis. The Mustangs host Prairie View A&M on Monday.
UT-Arlington has a 9-6 record, having fallen to Grand Canyon, 4-1, on Sunday in the finale of the Golden State Invitational.
When the Lions meet up with TCU on Sunday, they will see either the No. 20 ranked doubles team of Alastair Gray and Alex Rybakov, or the No. 41 ranked pair of Guillermo Nunez and Rybakov. On the singles side, Gray holds a No. 30 ITA ranking, with Rybakov at No. 32, and Trevor Johnson at No. 72. The Horned Frogs are 7-3 this spring, but host Duke and Florida prior to meeting up with Columbia.
