Brie Katz recently completed her third season as head coach of the Columbia volleyball program. Katz has spent the past 12 years on the Columbia volleyball staff, including three as associate head coach and six as assistant coach. She was promoted to head coach in January of 2014.

Katz coached Columbia to a landmark season in 2016. The Lions went 9-5 in Ivy League play, 14-10 overall, to tie for the best Ivy League record in program history. Senior Cassie Wes and first-year Chichi Ikwuazom were named First Team All-Ivy League. Additionally, Wes earned her second consecutive Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year selection and Ikwuazom became the first Lion in program history to be named Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Junior Anja Malesevic also earned postseason recognition on the All-Ivy League Second Team. Malesevic and Wes were both named Academic All-Ivy League, while the Lions won the AVCA Team Academic Award for a third consecutive year.

In 2015, the Lions went 7-16 overall and were sixth in the Ivy League with a record of 5-9. Katz also led the team to their first win over Yale in 14 years. Senior Katarina Jovicic and junior Cassie Wes each earned Second Team All-Ivy Honors, with Wes also capturing the Defensive Player of the Year Award.

During her first season on the bench in 2014, the Lions went 8-15 overall and tied for sixth in the Ivy League with a 4-10 mark against Ancient Eight opponents. She also led Columbia to the program's first victory over Penn at The Palestra and coached Bailey Springer to second-team All-Ivy Leauge honors.

Katz served three seasons as assistant coach of the Lions under Jon Wilson, after serving as the Acting Head Coach in 2007-08.  Katz works with setters, handles on-court practice and game instruction, and assists with recruiting.

Katz, who graduated from the NCAA Women Coaches Academy in June of 2008, helped her 2007 squad earn an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. In May of 2008, she served as the assistant coach for a U.S. Collegiate team, which traveled to Europe to compete in a series of matches in Austria and Germany. The team, which included three players from the Ivy League, went 4-1.

Prior to her time at Columbia, Katz served as the setting coach for the Long Island Juniors Volleyball Club, coaching the setters on each of the six teams the club sponsors in 2004. Katz also participated in Long Island Volleyball’s camps and clinics for five years, instructing players ranging from sixth grade to adult.

Katz was a setter and four-year letter winner at Hofstra University. During her college career, she was named America East Setter of the Year and honored by the National Jewish Athletic Hall of Fame as an outstanding female athlete. Katz graduated cum laude from Hofstra in 2003 with a BBA in finance, and worked for Deloitte from 2003-2005, serving the securitization transactions team as an analyst.

In her time at Columbia, Katz has received a master’s degree in Health Education from Teacher’s College, served as an associate professor of physical education, and developed/delivered the course “Action Type” for the Executive Education programs at Columbia Business School and University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. She has also presented to various coaching groups on personality/behavior assessments and team building, with a focus on MBTI and DiSC.

Katz earned her master’s in physical education and health education at Columbia’s Teacher’s College in May of 2007. She resides in Manhattan.
