NEW YORK – Brie Katz, Columbia’s Associate Head Volleyball Coach since December 2010, has been promoted to Head Volleyball Coach, Dr. M. Dianne Murphy, Director, Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education announced today.

“We are thrilled to be able to appoint Brie as the new Head Volleyball Coach at Columbia,” Murphy said.  “Brie has worked extraordinarily hard building a winning program with Jon Wilson.  I know that she will continue to elevate our volleyball team to the next level.”

Katz came to Columbia as a volunteer assistant in 2004, before being elevated to full time assistant coach in 2005.  Katz served as the acting head coach for the 2007 season, and in 2010 as promoted to Associate Head Coach under Jon Wilson.

Katz was a four-year letterwinner at Hofstra University. She led the team to the conference tournament all four years, with the team winning the championship two times and advancing to the NCAA tournament.  She was twice named first team All-Conference and first team All-Tournament and in 2000, was named American East Setter of the Year. In her senior season she was honored by the National Jewish Athletic Hall of Fame as an outstanding female athlete and was voted to the Verizon/CoSIDA Academic first team All-District.

“I am so excited and proud to be the next head volleyball coach here,” Katz said. “I love Columbia and I am very thankful for the opportunity to continue to build a volleyball team that we all can be proud of.”

“Brie deserves this opportunity,” Murphy added.  “Brie has been at Columbia for 10 years.  She has been loyal and extraordinarily hard working.  Jon Wilson did a wonderful job mentoring Brie and helping her prepare to be a head coach.  When Jon Wilson informed me he wanted to retire, he immediately recommended Brie for the job, and I completely agree.”

“I recognized the head coach potential in Brie immediately once I met her,” said former head coach Jon Wilson.  “She has assumed more responsibility each year.  She is a fantastic associate head coach, but I know she will be an amazing head coach as well. I am so thrilled for her, and for the Columbia Volleyball program.”

“It is rare that you can have a coaching change that requires little to no transition,” Murphy concluded.  “We are very fortunate that with Brie, our volleyball program will be able to hit the ground running.  We are in a great position to build on our successes.”
