NEW YORKCharlee Dyroff and Katarina Jovicic have been tabbed as co-captains of the 2014 Columbia volleyball team, head coach Brie Katz announced this afternoon. Dyroff and Jovicic will lead the Lions during Katz’ first year at the helm of the Columbia program.

“Charlee and Kat work incredibly hard to serve their teammates and honor this program,” said Katz. “They care deeply about building and sustaining a culture of inclusiveness and excellence, and I feel very fortunate to have them as captains this season.”

Dyroff, a native of Boulder, Colorado, enters her senior campaign after a season sidelined due to injury. Through two seasons on the court in Columbia Blue, the 5-foot-6 libero has registered 635 digs (4.50 dps), needing only 194 to crack Columbia’s all-time career dig top-five list. As a first-year in 2011, she recorded 425 digs (4.89 dps), which lands second on the Lions’ all-time season list. That same season Dyroff set Columbia’s single-game record for digs with 39 against Boston College Sept. 18, 2011.

Joining Dyroff in the captain’s role is Jovicic, who hails from Toronto, Ontario. The 6-foot-3 junior has played in 39 matches in two years as a middle hitter for the Lions. In 2013, she posted career highs of 102 kills and 50 blocks over 60 sets while notching a team-high attack percentage  .320. Jovicic also landed among the Ivy League’s best with 0.83 blocks per set which ranked 11th in the Ancient Eight.

The Lions open its 2014 slate with three matches at their home tournament, the Columbia Invitational, Sept. 5-6. Columbia will first take the court on Friday, Sept. 5 for a 7:30 p.m. showdown with Bucknell. The Lions will return to action Saturday, Sept. 6 for a 12 p.m. matinee with Stony Brook and conclude the invite with a 7 p.m. nightcap against Fairfield.
