NEW YORK - The Columbia volleyball team fell to Penn in straight sets Saturday night at the Palestra by set scores of 16-25, 22-25, 20-25.

Sophomore Bailey Springer led the way for Columbia (5-13, 3-7 Ivy League) with 11 kills, while senior Molly Winger had 12 digs on the night.

Penn (12-9, 6-4 Ivy League) was led by a match-high 16 kills from Kristen Etterbeek and 23 digs from Dani Shepherd.

The Quakers controlled the majority of the first set, but the Lions put up a fight in the second with a close comeback attempt. Columbia outblocked Penn 4 to 1 in the second set and the Quakers registered eight attacking errors to make it a close game. Kills by Springer and sophomore Lucy Tilton put Columbia in position for the win late in the set with a 21-19 score. However, the Quakers rattled off four unanswered points to take the lead for good, carrying momentum into the third set to lead throughout and take the match.

The Lions are back in action with a pair of matches next weekend. Columbia will battle it out at Yale on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. match at Brown on Saturday, Nov. 9.
