Volleyball Set to Face Harvard, Dartmouth in Final Road Matches
NEW YORK - Columbia volleyball heads north for rematches with Ivy League foes Harvard and Dartmouth this weekend for its last pair of road matches this season. The Lions are set to face Harvard at 7 p.m. on Friday followed by a 5 p.m. showdown with Dartmouth on Saturday.
Last Time Out
Columbia (10-9, 5-5 Ivy League) split its matches at Yale and Brown last weekend. The Lions put up a fight against Yale, making a big comeback with a 25-21 second set victory after falling in a tough 15-25 first set loss. The Bulldogs edged the Lions in extra points in set three before ultimately winning the fourth and final set. Two Lions recorded double-doubles to lead the way, including Megan Gaughn, who posted a season-high 22 kills to go with 10 digs, and Colleen Brennan, who had 34 assists and 16 digs.
Columbia bounced back with a 3-0 sweep over Brown on Saturday by scores of 25-13, 25-20, 25-17. As a team, the Lions hit .333 on the night, including a season-high .370 hitting percentage from Gaughn, who also posted a match-high 13 kills.
Leading the Lions
Gaughn continues to lead the Lions with 2.67 kills/set, while Heather Braunagel leads with a .349 hitting percentage and 1.21 blocks/set. Colleen Brennan is Columbia's leading setter, averaging 6.98 assists, while Molly Winger leads with 3.45 digs/set.
As a team, the Lions currently lead the Ivy League and rank 34th in the nation averaging 2.64 blocks/set.
Columbia vs. Harvard (8-13, 5-5 Ivy League)
Harvard dropped a pair of matches last weekend at Penn and Princeton by scores of 3-0.
On the attack front, Taylor Docter leads Harvard with 3.22 kills/set, while Kristen Casey and Caroline Walters are tied for the team lead with a .364 hitting percentage. Casey also leads the Crimson with 3.78 digs/set, while Walters leads with 1.01 blocks/set.
Columbia fell just short to Harvard earlier this season as the Crimson squeezed by the Lions, 3-0, in Levien Gym by scores of 23-25, 22-25, 20-25. Braunagel was precise on the attacking end for the Lions, as she posted a season-high .727 hitting percentage after posting eight kills and committing zero errors.
Columbia vs. Dartmouth (2-18, 1-9 Ivy League)
The Dartmouth, now on a 10-match losing streak, also dropped a pair of matches at Penn and Princeton last weekend by 3-0 scores.
Alex Schoenberger leads the Big Green with 2.76 kills/set, while Elisa Scudder leads with a .309 hitting percentage and .97 blocks/set. Holly Harper checks in with 3.51 digs/set, while Kayden Cook leads the team with 7.20 assists/set.
Earlier this season, five Lions posted double figures to lift Columbia to a 3-1 win over Dartmouth, which was the Lions' fifth straight win over the Big Green dating back to the 2010 season. Putting up the big numbers was Gaughn with a 12-kill, 10-dig double-double, Brennan with 46 assists, Bailey Springer and Caitlin Brenton, who recorded 11 kills each, and Charlee Dyroff with 15 digs.
As a team, the Lions posted a season-high .348 hitting percentage, led by first-years Springer and Atlanta Moye-McLaren, who hit .579 and .545, respectively. Brenton also had a big day as she recorded a season-high .500 hitting percentage that included 11 kills and only two errors in 18 attempts.
