Gaughn, Poland Named Columbia's October Student-Athletes of the Month
Gaughn has helped lead the Columbia volleyball team to one of its best seasons in program history, with shining play in the month of October. Gaughn registered double-double efforts in all but one of the matches she played in the month of October, an entirely Ivy League slate.
She helped lead the Lions to a 3-1 upset win over Dartmouth in the beginning of the month, and followed that up with wins over Brown, previously undefeated Princeton, Harvard and once again over Dartmouth. She finished the month with 154 kills, a team high and second on the team in digs with 144, proving her importance on both offense and defense. She also had ten service aces and 17 total blocks.
Gaughn has helped the Lions to a record of 14-6 overall, and 6-4 in the Ivy League, one of the best seasons in program history. With just four games left, the Lions are guaranteed to have a winning season, the first for the team since 2001. The team's six Ivy League wins are currently the second highest league win total in program history, and the total of 14 wins is the third highest win total in program history.
Poland has been a stalwart for the men's cross country team in the month of October, as he was Columbia's top finisher in every race he ran.
At the Paul Short Invitational at the beginning of the month, Poland led the team to a seventh place finish out of 42 teams, and he was also the top finisher at the prestigious Pre-Nationals race in Indiana just a couple of weeks later. There, he finished 40th overall, out of 241 runners, including some of the best in the nation.
And at the 2010 Ivy League Championships, Poland led Columbia to a third place finish, as he came in fourth overall, earning first-team All-Ivy League honors.
