NEW YORK – The Columbia volleyball team rebounded from a tough loss to Yale on Friday to beat Brown in Levien Gymnasium Saturday night, 3-0. The Lions beat the Bears 25-15, 25-17, 25-23 to improve to 13-7 overall and 7-3 in the Ivy League.

Columbia came out early, striking often against the Bears. The Lions took a 4-2 lead over Brown on a kill from Megan Gaughn, and though Brown closed the gap and tied it up at 6, Columbia wouldn’t relent. A kill from Heather Braunagel gave Columbia 10-8 lead, and back-to-back kills from Gaughn increased the lead to 12-8. Though Brown would score twice more, Columbia went on a 5-0 run to widen the lead to 16-10. From there, the Bears couldn’t find their footing, and Columbia continued to strike hard. With first-year Molly Winger scoring, the Lions went on another 5-0 run to go up 23-14. From there, it took a kill from first-year Michelle Snyder and a Brown attack error, and the Lions had the first set win, 25-15.

Up 1-0, the Lions seemed to relax a little bit, allowing the Bears to take an early lead in the second set. Brown went up 4-2, before seeing Columbia tie it up with a block from Braunagel. Brown would take the lead again and widen it to 11-6, but after a timeout, the Lions got back in the game. A Brown attack error sparked a run, and with senior Cindy Chen serving, the Lions scored four straight points to close the gap to 11-10. The Bears widened the lead again to 15-12, but again, the Lions would rally back. A kill from sophomore Madeline Rumer made it 15-13, and a service ace from Gaughn sparked another run. Columbia would score six straight points to take the lead, 18-15. From there, Columbia retained the momentum, used kills from Caitlin Brenton and Braunagel to go up 24-17, and a service ace from senior co-captain Nicole Goldhaber ended it, 25-17, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set seemed to be more of a battle for both teams, as they went back and forth throughout. The Lions led for most of the match, though Brown closed the gap every time Columbia would pull ahead. The Bears brought it the closest at the end of the set, as Columbia led 22-19, and Brown used two kills to make it 22-21. From there, Columbia pulled ahead, and despite a last-minute rally by the Bears at match point, a serve into the net by Brown ended it, giving Columbia the 25-23 set win, and a 3-0 match win overall.

Junior Megan Gaughn led the Lions with 11 kills, 13 digs and two service aces, while sophomore setter Colleen Brennan also had a double-double, with 35 assists and 10 digs. Charlee Dyroff added 13 digs in the win.

Up next for the Lions is another home Ivy League weekend, as Columbia will host Harvard and Dartmouth, Friday, November 4th at 7 p.m. and Saturday, November 5th at 5 p.m.
